INSIGHTS INTO THE BANKING INDUSTRY

Proposed N.Y. de novo bank to cater to first responders

A proposed bank in New York plans to offer special products to first responders.

Organizers of Greater Gotham Bank is in talks with the International Association of Fire Fighters/AFL-CIO to provide specialized services to union members who are professional firefighters and paramedics.

Those products could include free or discounted checking accounts; premium rate CDs; free access to remote, telephone and Internet banking; and free or discounted non-proprietary ATM access.

“If the initial program is successful, Gotham intends to seek to grow this program over time through relationships with similar organizations,” the group said in their application with the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp.

Greater Gotham plans to operate a traditional branch in White Plains, N.Y. – in a recently closed Citigroup location – and a loan production office on Long Island. The bank’s main business will involve accepting local deposits and making business loans, principally commercial mortgage loans, within its service area

The proposed bank’s president and CEO is Laurence Marchini III, who led Gotham Bank in New York when it was sold to Sterling National Bank in 2012.

Organizers plan to raise up to $50 million of initial capital.
