INSIGHTS INTO THE BANKING INDUSTRY

Former OCC official joins Anchorage Digital Bank board

Julie L. Williams, who twice served as Acting Comptroller of the Currency, has joined the board of Anchorage Digital Bank in San Francisco.

Williams oversaw the OCC from April 1998 to December 1998 and from October 2004 to August 2005.

Her addition “brings us additional banking industry and regulatory perspectives and experience, enhancing the value that we provide our clients and helping us shape a model for the industry,” Anchorage said in an announcement.

“As an independent board member, she will help drive Anchorage … forward with requisite, highly credible feedback and focus on monitoring accomplishments — precisely the oversight that can strengthen our ongoing efforts to assure our safe and sound and compliance operations,” the announcement added.

Anchorage, a custodian for digital assets, received a national trust bank charter from the OCC in 2021.

The OCC instructed Anchorage in 2021 to improve its compliance and procedures tied to the Bank Secrecy Act and anti-money laundering laws. An April 2022 consent order said the bank had failed to adopt and implement a program to adequately address those issues.
